Summary

Recognising a piece of information when it is shown to you is not the same as being able to recall that information at will.

Content

We can recognise much that we have forgotten. Being able to recognise it, though, is not necessarily useful.

However, there are some times that recognition acts as a reminder for further recall.

Recollection with minimal reminding is a sign that the information recalled is better 'learned' as it is better recalled.

#spaced repetition and Active Recall systems strengthen those memory pathways.

To better remember something is to better know it.

However, memorisation systems like Anki involving spaced repetition and active recall may not necessarily be the best way for everyone to memorise information.

For information to be useful, it has to be used . So it may be that a process of Creative Recall (generative learning) may be better. If we can use the terms, ideas and information we want to learn in a creative exercise then we are more likely to see its use. If we can see its use then we are more likely to memorise it.
