Summary

There is a joy in writing by hand - a connection with the page. It also forces more thought about the writing, as there is little chance for correction.

Content

I wonder how writing by hand might influence the way I think about what I write. If 'The medium is the message', then writing notes by hand must be intrinsically different to writing notes on a computer.

Questions:

Does this mean writing fiction by hand is more 'creative' than using a computer?

Does the mind have to use more working memory to adapt what it is trying to say when writing by hand?

Challenges

Writing by hand is inherently less useful.

Handwritten notes cannot be searched.

They cannot be updated along principles of Creative Recall (generative learning).

They are harder to file and access and take up physical space.

They are not accessible remotely.

Without easy backups, they are much more vulnerable to damage and loss.
